RICE

They say when you wake up with injuries that you didn’t have when you went to bed-you are getting older. I guess they should add, when you get injured doing normal things- you are old.

Somehow while getting into the shower, I managed to sublex by knee and sprain it. So I have been relegated to hobbling around my home like an old woman. I’ve arrived.

Adding insult to injury,  I finally got off my bum yesterday and ran one mile-without stopping, after a 5 month hiatus from the habit.  Now I know 1 mile isn’t a lot, but that was the compromise I made with myself and my heart. I will increase cardiac output for 10 minutes a day even if it’s something I loathe. I felt good.  “I’m going to keep doing this!” Then wham-in a moment of pain and shame,  I’m on the floor writhing in pain.

Despite my 5 months of sloth, I was determined not to be set back by a bum knee. So I launched the search for non weight bearing exercises and landed on chair cardio. It’s not pretty, but I can see how it would be effective in staying off holiday blues and pounds… My husband rolled his eyes. Yah,  I don’t get me either.

After 5 months of not running, the moment I couldn’t, I wished I could-badly.   They say you don’t miss something until it’s gone. It is November and gratitude exercises flood our social media.  I take so much for granted. Have you ever considered this? What if you only had tomorrow what you gave thanks for today?  Changes your perspective pretty quick. The mundane is full of blessings.

Maybe your not battling bad tendons..but I’m pretty sure your battling something. Anxiety, loss, loneliness…the list goes on.  Even in the grind of a normal day, we can feel pretty run down.

When you have an ortho injury you are supposed to RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.  These interventions decrease inflammation and then decrease the pain.  All great things until healing happens. That’s my prescription and I share it with you!

This month, Rest in the fact that we really are blessed. Choose to give thanks for those things that get lost and ignored.  Put the grinch on ice. Your words matter, talk nice to others and YOURSELF. Look for the positive! Hug more. There is some power in a hug. Check out this video if you don’t believe me.  My husband reminds me that women like hugs. I do like his hugs…I hope he doesn’t go around hugging all women.  So be careful who you hug.  The point being-find someone to hug.

Lastly,  elevate those burdens and praise to our heavenly father.  Philippians 4:6 – “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God…”

Before long, you will feel like yourself again.
